The Man Behind the Fig Leaf

13.1 42 AfterNative South Floridian Jim Downing, owner-operator of Tropical Touch Landscapes, has chlorophyll running through his veins. As a child in suburban Miami, he spent as many hours outdoors as he could, not just doing typical kid-stuff, but, unbeknownst to him at the time, also applying himself to what would become his passion and current craft.

When he wasn’t helping landscape and maintain the acre+ property on which his family’s modest three-bedroom ranch house resided, he was mowing, edging, trimming and planting for neighbors to earn cash. “I’ve mowed enough miles of grass to know that maintenance is not my preferred type of landscaping work,” he says with a chuckle.

Although Jim prefers undertaking most tasks himself on any given project, sometimes time and job scope warrant help. “I can certainly repair an irrigation system, for example, but sometimes my time is better spent with my hands on the plants or drafting a design instead of on PVC piping and glue,” he says. “Project size is another factor. We re-landscaped a quarter-mile-long gated entrance to the Sanctuary in Palm Beach Gardens and installed a ton of new trees throughout the community. We dealt with the City Forester and utilities companies, tip-toed around the protected preserve that edges many of the properties, planted over 80 trees and installed root barriers, much of which required crew in addition to myself.”

Whether working solo or with his crew, Jim Downing has the touch, the Tropical Touch, and he uses it on every job—from tiny residential lots to large estate properties. Jim Downing of Tropical Touch Landscapes. Conscientious, honest, on the job every step of the way.
